Yoga & Motion

January 2011

January 1, 2011 – Day of rest on 1/1/11

January 2, 2011 – 90 mins Yin Yoga

I love the fact the the teacher describes how each asana is linked to opening, relaxing, and circulating oxygen and blood through various organs. This time, the liver and the gall-bladder were the targeted organs, and in particular, the swan pose was incredibly opening. It was an amazingly regenerating class, I felt SO loose after!

January 3, 2011 – 45 mins walk in the brisk, cool air with MR

January 4, 2011 – 15 mins walk with MR, 15 mins abs

January 5, 2011 – 60 mins Moksha Yoga, 30 mins walk with MR

With yoga, not every class is going to go the way that you hope it will. Today’s class was a perfect example of how in the first few minutes, in the first few poses and balances, your opinions and views of how you should be can frame the rest of the class. I had it in my head that I wasn’t going to be balanced, that my ankle was feeling unstable, and I fell out of a few balances – not like me. Once that happened, I said “ok, it happened, just focus,” and moved on, getting back into the balance. I still was not fully concentrated on my practice, and realize, that this idea of getting back on track in spite of downfalls, obstacles, and fears, is going to be harder than I thought!

January 6, 2011 – Today was going to be a swim day, but my muscles were really sore, and I decided that a hot tub session was what my body craved.

January 7, 2011 – 20 mins yoga (freestyle), 10 mins abs, 30 mins walk with MR

January 13, 2011 – 2.56 km swim

January 14, 2011 – 20 mins yoga, 30 mins walk with MR

January 15, 2011 – 30 mins yoga, 45 mins trudge through high snow with MR

January 16, 2011 – 90 mins Yin Yoga

Wow, each time I take this class, not only do I get my body restored, but I find myself really exploring new ideas.

Yin Yoga is meant to stretch connective tissues, specifically the ligaments and tendons, in the body. By holding a yin pose for a long time, the body will succumb to the slow and steady gravitational forces, and by releasing into the pose, the connective tissues are gently stretched and lengthened. Yin Yoga is really focused on promoting flexibility in the tissues in areas often perceived as non-malleable.  Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Yin Yoga theology is that blockages to the flows of energy through the body eventually manifest in physical ailments, such as a stiff back , weak knees, stomach ailments, digestive issues, etc. The biology of this is best described by the fact that there is a network of connective tissues through the body and a Yin class is meant to open up those blockages.

Today’s class was focused on the hips, and the teacher guided us through a series of very intense poses. I am amazed each class how active my mind is and how it’s not going through the stresses of the day, but rather being opened up to new thoughts. I couldn’t help this class but think about how much the body stores all our stress, fears, and emotional upsets. Opening up the physical joints seems to open up a whole lot more, and I became aware of how resistant I (much like my tissues) was  to facing some of that.

January 17, 2011 Rest day!

January 18, 2011 2.08 km swim

January 19, 2011 60 mins Moksha Yoga

Another glorious Moksha class! I really felt in the zone this evening. It was interesting, because at one point the instructor commented on how he saw a lot of wandering eyes and that we should all focus on our own practices, not those of others. The idea behind any yoga practice, is of course, to take it to your own limits and not compare your abilities to others. It was in the moment that I realized how ‘in my own practice’ I was. By this I mean, a class as though there was no one else there. I even find that I don’t look at myself in the mirror, I let my body lead me into the poses. It took me a long time to get here, and it’s not the case in every class, but I’m so thankful that I’ve come to a place where I can truly be inside my OWN yoga practice.

February 6, 2011 – Sick Day! 90 mins Yin Yoga

This was a hard class for me. Between the sniffles and my sore, weak body, I was quite aware that my body and mind were being pushed to their limits in this class. The instructor kept on reminding us about our breath, leading us into and out of each position, and how without breathe, we are not doing yoga. I was acutely aware of how important breath was, but also health. Without breath we have nothing, without health we have nothing. These last few weeks of being sick reminded me how lucky I am to be healthy and alive. When you are sick, everything else in your life really takes second fiddle.

February 12, 2011 –  I can talk a bit, but still taking it easy on using my voice. After getting an arm workout from whisking eggs (for the Peppermint Mocha Cupcake frosting), I did a melange of BodyRock.tv (Body Weight Exercise Challenge, I did about 30 of them, I think) & Ass Busting Workout).

February 13, 2011 – I can talk a bit more, but still taking it easy on using my voice. The bf, MR, and I took a breath-taking 40 mins walk through the nearby bluffs and marina.

During the whole time of being sick, I’ve tried to do a little bit every day. I didn’t always manage to, since my energy has been all over the place. I have been really trying to respect my body’s wishes and I tried not to beat myself up for not being able to do what I wanted to. I tell you, this has been hard. This cold was relentless.

February 14, 2011 – In time for Valentines..I can finally talk normally!! I also really enjoyed a 2.05 km swim!

February 15, 2011 – I started my 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge today with a comical 90 mins Moksha Yoga class

February 25, 2011 – Day 11 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 90 mins Yin Yoga

This class was extraordinary. Two asanas in particular were remarkably opening: a bridge asana (with blocks underneath my back) and a savasana asana (with blocks underneath my spine and head). And, the instructor made an really interesting comment at the beginning of class: “Pay attention to your breathe as you inhale and exhale, making your unconscious breathing into conscious breathing by being present to the breathe as it moves through your body, in and out.” I feel like this is a classic example of how even in work, play, conversation, and activities (e.g. fitness), one can always be brought back to the present, to acknowledge how they feel in a moment by taking the moment to recognize how their bodies are reacting or more simply, how their bodies are breathing and moving…

February 26, 2011 – Day 12 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 10 mins Ashtanga Yoga, 30 mins walk with MR

March 2011

March 1, 2011 – Day 15 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 40 mins Ashtanga Yoga and my 30 days yoga challenge mid-way check in: … 9 hrs in 15 days…

March 2, 2011 – Day 16 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 60 mins Therapeutic Yoga

I am a firm believer that you can learn from every yoga teacher. While Therapeutic Yoga, or Hatha Yoga, is not traditionally ‘my kind of yoga,’ I do believe that I can learn things from each class. I have been feeling quite overcome with my IBS symptoms the last few days, and I needed a less intense yoga practice to soothe and circulate oxygen/blood/energy through my body and in particular, my digestive system. I took this class with a friend, and while it was slow paced and light, it reminded me of some pranayama (or breathing exercises) which bring back focus to breath + movement. Sometimes it’s easy to take this for granted in yoga…the breath should keep up with the movement. But, yoga is really about breath leading us through movement, not the other way around!

March 3, 2011 – Day 17 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: My plans to swim turned into plans to relax in a hot tub…great way to start off the day!

March 4, 2011 – Day 18 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: Yin Yoga Teacher Training30 mins Yin Yoga (actual practice time)

March 5, 2011 – Day 19 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: Yin Yoga Teacher Training120 mins Yin Yoga (actual practice time)

March 6, 2011 – Day 20 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: Yin Yoga Teacher Training 210 mins Yin Yoga (actual practice time)

March 7, 2011 – Day 21 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 30 mins Ashtanga Yoga

March 8, 2011 – Day 22 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 40 mins Ashtanga Yoga, 5 mins abs

March 9, 2011 – Day 23 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 60 mins Moksha Yoga, 5 mins Yin Yoga (1 pose, each side)

Something I noticed during this practice was the energy in the room. There were probably 40 people in the class, and typically with that many people the focus, the determination, the positive energy is undeniably present. Today was different. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I was aware that I was distracted by the fact that it seemed others were not fully ‘present’ in the room. What was even more interesting is the teacher came to talk to me after, and said “what was with the energy today? It was weird, right?” I became super aware of the fact that the energy of the people in the room has a remarkable influence on the experience of each class.

March 10, 2011 – Day 24 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 2 km swim

March 11, 2011 – Day 25 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 45 mins Yin Yoga, circuit training (yin before yang)

My Yin Yoga practice was a meld of a few online video previews, including practices lead by Bernie Clark, Paul Grilley, and Paulie Zink, and the circuit training series was courtesy of Fit Sugar’s Kerry Walsh On the Road Workout.

March 12, 2011 – Day 26 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 45 mins Ashtanga Yoga, 20 mins walk with MR

March 13, 2011 – Day 27 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 90 mins Yin Yoga

This practice made me think about ‘expectations.’ I walked into the class expecting the regular instructor, who ended up not being there, and expecting my friend to be there, who ended up being absent. While flowing through the asanas, I also started thinking about my expectations surrounding my position in the poses, which in Yin Yoga is irrelevant. In Yin, you are meant to go to your extreme point/your point of stress in the each asana, and revel in it…sit there in stillness, acknowledging your place, acknowledging the discomfort, acknowledging your mental reactions…and then…letting them all go. Same with the teacher and my friend, they weren’t there. That’s all that happened and that’s all I have to acknowledge. My practice was great, I felt great afterwards, and that’s that!

The other think I appreciated about today’s practice was the teacher’s comment about letting thoughts/distractions/discomforts just drift away and bringing in the breath to take their place as we sit in each pose.

March 14, 2011 – Day 28 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 35 mins Hatha Yoga to ease my upset stomach

March 15, 2011 – Day 29 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 30 mins Hatha Yoga to ease my upset stomach

March 16, 2011 – Day 30 of 30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge: 90 mins Moksha Yoga

This class actually made me mad! Yes, there was the pigeon pose with always stirs up crabbiness in me. Pigeon opens up the hips, which is thought to be the place where emotions are stored. It is quite common to open up feelings of anger, frustration, and crabbiness (aka, get me out of this pose…is it over yet…why are we here so long…). In this class, however, there were 7-8 people who kept enter and exiting the class, and people were talking throughout. It made me mad… but this is coming from a place where I’ve practiced for 11 years, been to many studios, come to think of yoga as my lifestyle, and thus, have fully embraced the ‘etiquette’ of yoga, however, I found that in that moment I lost the patience for those who are new, who don’t prescribe to this lifestyle, who are unaware of the impacts of their behaviours on others in the room…etc. I realized I needed to take a breath and focus inward, on my own practice and not let what I started to think about others influence or upset me. It also made me come to terms with the fact that I was creating stories about how they were disturbing others in the room, being rude, etc…and that wasn’t fair of me to judge them or be angry about it.

30 hours in 30 days yoga challenge summary…24 hours in 30 days…or…48 mins of yoga/day.

April 3,  2011 – 90 mins Yin Yoga with my friend from my Yin Yoga Teacher Training

This class was a whole anatomical series tailored to the spine. Interestingly, it was so intense since we were twisting this way and that around our spinal column. It was also so relaxing…it is exactly what I needed. As of yet, I haven’t had a class that really described the anatomical benefits of the Yin practice and it was really interesting to hear about the fascia and bones benefits while doing the asanas. I have also never experienced a class tailored to the spine. It is so classic in pilates that the straight spine, tight core, etc is encouraged and a huge focus of all the cues, however, in yoga, while alignment and those ideas are mentioned, it was interesting to experience a class which spoke to those ideas in great detail.

It felt so good to be back at the studio for a class. This class focused on the mother organ…the spleen…in honour of mother’s day today. The spleen acts to nourish the body and so acts as a mother to all organs and systems, it is extremely important in creating and storing red blood cells as well as supporting the immune system. This was a restorative/relaxing yin class; typically spleen-focused classes are amongst the most yin of yin classes…it was exactly what the doctor would have ordered IF he had ordered a yoga class to encourage the strengthening of my immune system!!
